The bubbling energy of a child can evoke warm feelings in one's heart. The visionary leader Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru (India first prime minister) believed in nourishing the young minds for the better future of tomorrow. Aligning with the thoughts of the capable leader, India declared the birth anniversary of its first prime minister as the national children's day. Every year on the 14th day of November, the country celebrates children day as the significance of little ones and tries to alleviate the issues children are forced to face in dire conditions.

Children’s day in India falls six days before the world’s children’s day, where the United Nations uphold the significance of nurturing the children by providing the best of facilities to lay a strong foundation for a better future. They try to extend their hands to the underprivileged section of the world where many young ones face atrocities and hardships due to grim circumstances they are brought up with. UN declared November 20 as the world’s children’s day as it marks the anniversary of adopting The Declaration of the Rights Of the Child in 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. This year the theme for worlds children’s day upholds the rights of children to “recover from the interruptions and learning losses experienced through the pandemic in the last two years”.

India annually observes the children’s day as a remembrance of its dear leader who openly claimed that he may not have time for adults, but he has enough time for children. In response to his warm attitude, children lovingly called him chachaji or chacha Nehru. He strongly rooted for the education of children who can be the true wealth of a nation. The length and breadth of the country awaken on November 14 to commemorate the day of children. Educational institutions, particularly schools arrange various events, activities and games to engage and direct the little ones on the importance of having a fulfilled childhood.

Diverse programmes are arranged throughout the day or the week to celebrate childhood and children and make them feel special. Schools and colleges conduct talent hunts of music, dance, arts and other events such as quizzes, debates, elocution to instil joy among children. Sports events can also be a part of children’s day celebrations. Most schools give children the liberty to wear colourful dresses, freeing them from mundane school uniforms. Teachers may also entertain the children by conducting assemblies and performing dance and music. This day is also set aside to spread happiness among the less privileged sections of society. Teachers and students may visit orphanages and slums in the nearby area to distribute some clothes, food and toys collected from the schools and colleges. The values of sharing and caring are fostered during the children’s day festival.

Parents and teachers may also indulge in gifting young kids with things they like such as books, stationery items, clothes, sandals, chocolates or playthings to make a memorable and jolly childhood. Kids are the uncut gems of a nation, and a content childhood has the capacity to unleash the best residing inside the hearts of children.
